How to Make Play dough: A Fun and Simple Recipe

Making your own play dough at home is not only easy but also a fun activity for the whole family! This homemade play dough is non-toxic, safe for kids, and can provide hours of creative entertainment. Plus, you can customize the colors and scents to make it even more exciting. Here’s how to whip up a batch of our delightful play dough.

Ingredients

To get started, gather these simple ingredients:

- 2 cups all-purpose flour

- 3/4 cup salt

- 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

- 2 cups warm water

- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

- Food colouring (optional)

- Quart-sized bags for storage

Instructions

1. Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Stir until well blended.

2. Combine the Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix together the lukewarm water and vegetable oil. If you’re using food coloring, add it to the wet mixture now. Adjust the amount based on how vibrant you want the colors to be.

3. Cook the Mixture

Transfer the both bowls to a pot and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly for about 3-5 minutes, or until the dough thickens and starts to pull away from the sides of the pot

4. Knead the Dough

Once the dough has cooked, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Once it’s cool enough to handle, knead the dough on a clean surface for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

6. Store Your Play Dough

Divide the play dough into portions and place each portion into a quart-sized bag or airtight container. This will keep the playdough fresh for several weeks.

Tips for Play dough Fun

- Custom Colours and Scents: Experiment with different colours by using various food colouring. You can also add a few drops of essential oils for delightful scents.

- Themed Play: Use cookie cutters, rolling pins, and other tools to create themed play dough scenes, like a bakery or a construction site.

- Storage: Keep the play dough in a cool, dry place to prolong its life. If it starts to dry out, you can add a few drops of water and knead it again.

Making playdough is a fantastic way to engage creativity, enhance fine motor skills, and enjoy quality time with siblings and friends. So gather your ingredients, roll up your sleeves, and let the fun begin!
