I’m a mom of three, and like most parents, I just wanted my kids to feel safe, happy, and cared for—especially during those times when school isn’t in session.
I’ve spent most of my life working as a childhood educator and respite worker, so caring for children has always been a big part of who I am. Through those experiences, I’ve had the chance to support so many different children and families, and I’ve seen firsthand how much the right environment—and the right people—can make a difference.
Every year when summer, March break, or PA days came around, I found myself feeling uneasy. I’d look into different camps for my kids, wanting something fun—but also something structured, safe, and led by people who really understood children. A lot of the options just didn’t feel like the right fit for us. Many were run by younger staff who were doing their best, but it didn’t always give me the confidence I was looking for as a parent.
At the same time, through my work, I was seeing other families struggle even more. Parents of children who needed extra support were constantly having to advocate for space, often being told there wasn’t room or that their child’s needs couldn’t be met. Even when they did find something, the environment was overwhelming. It stuck with me. It didn’t feel like it should be that hard just to find good care.
One evening, I was sitting at the table with my kids after a long day looking for summer camp. My youngest was drawing beside me, talking about her day, when she casually said, “Mom, why don’t you just make your own camp?”
I kind of laughed it off at first—but the idea didn’t leave me.
The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Not in a big, life-changing way at first—just in a quiet, “maybe there’s something here” kind of way. I didn’t set out thinking I had all the answers. I just knew what I wished existed for my own kids, and what I kept hearing other parents wish for too.
So I started small, with the hope of creating something that felt different. A place where kids could come and just be themselves. Where families didn’t feel like they had to fight for a spot. Where inclusivity was natural, not something extra you had to ask for.
That’s how Your Neighbourhood Camp began.
Now, we run summer camps, PA day programs, and March break camps out of King’s University for children ages 4–12. I’ve been really lucky to build a team of caring, experienced adult staff who genuinely enjoy working with kids. We also work alongside students from local universities and colleges, which has been such a great way to support both children and future educators at the same time.
It’s not perfect, and I’m always learning—but it’s something I care deeply about. At the end of the day, I just wanted to create a place that I would feel good about sending my own children to.
And I think that’s still what guides everything we do. I’m so proud of what YNC has become and it’s been my absolute pleasure supporting the community in London Ontario.
